Whether you like yours with vodka, gin, tequila or virgin this is a perfect Bloody Mary Mix made using fresh tomatoes. This takes very little time and is much better than any store bought version. Plus you get to control your spice level![/et_pb_text][el_masonry_gallery image_ids=”518,509″ number_of_columns=”2″ _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][/el_masonry_gallery][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]Some of the links in this post are affiliate links. Tomatoes

This recipe calls for fresh tomatoes, but you can substitute six cups of tomato juice if you don’t have tomatoes on hand. This recipe is also easily scalable. You will need around 1/2 pound of tomatoes per serving. It doesn’t matter what type of tomatoes you use as long as they are very ripe and juicy.

If you have an abundance of fresh tomatoes around consider making my Homemade Horseradish Ketchup or Creamy Garden Tomato Soup!

Making Bloody Mary Mix

First, roughly dice your tomatoes, onion, celery root and spicy pepper (like jalapeño) and add those to your blender. If you don’t have celery root, you can use 1 teaspoon of celery seed for a similar flavor. Next add 1/2 teaspoon salt, garlic clove, fresh lemon juice and fresh grated horseradish and blend until your mixture turns liquid.[/et_pb_text][el_masonry_gallery image_ids=”526,516,523″ number_of_columns=”3″ _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][/el_masonry_gallery][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]

I love my Ninja Blender as it makes quick work of this process – it took only a minute! If you are looking for a blender consider this one. (affiliate link) It comes with a food processor attachment that also works like a dream, saving you precious space in the kitchen. And the two additional cups are great for smaller jobs, like smoothies!

Now strain your mix using a fine mesh sieve to catch any tomato seeds. You may need to use a spoon or rubber scraper to help pass all of the juice through your strainer.

Mine was closer to pink. The color of your juice will mostly be determined by the type of tomatoes you choose.

Now taste your Bloody Mary Mix and begin adjusting your spice level and flavor – adding ground pepper, horseradish, Worcestershire Sauce and hot sauce to your taste.[/et_pb_text][el_masonry_gallery image_ids=”522,510″ number_of_columns=”2″ _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][/el_masonry_gallery][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content” sticky_enabled=”0″]

I like to use a mortar and pestle to grind my pepper because you have more control over the size of your powder. I hate large chunks of pepper in a Bloody Mary! They are also great for freshly grinding any other spices. Consider this one if you are looking to purchase. (affiliate link)

Voila!

You don’t have to wait until 5 o’clock! You’re Bloody Mary Mix is ready to use however your heart desires. You can enjoy it undiluted, over ice or simply add your favorite spirit – vodka, gin or tequila – shake and serve with a selection of garnishes! I also recommend rimming your glass with celery salt, paprika and/or onion salt, by first running a lemon or lime around the edge.

Oregon is home to a bunch of wonderful distilleries and I personally recommend Eastside Distilling’s Portland Potato Vodka or Pilot House Distilling’s Gin or Tequila!

To make a Bloody Mary Cocktail, simply combine 3/4 cup – 1 cup of your Bloody Mary Mix with 1.5 – 2 ounces of your desired spirit and strain over ice. Now to decide on your garnishes!

Garnishes

This is your chance to get extra creative! You can use traditional options like olives, pickles and celery. Or try some other fun ideas like jerky, fresh bell peppers or dilly beans. I recently made my Homemade Dilly Beans (I’ll share shortly) and they just made it to their two week birthday – which means they are ready to start enjoying – so they were my obvious choice.

What are your favorite garnishes for your perfect Bloody Mary?
