This broccoli salad with cranberries and walnuts may not look like much, but it’s bound to steal the show! The “secret” ingredient is celery seed which adds a pop of flavor in every bite.

This recipe is inspired by a dish I fell in love with at Kachka during Portland Dining Month years ago and it’s not wonder they made it on my favorite spots to dine out in Portland list. Kachka is an amazing little Russian restaurant and if you are in the US you can now get their dumplings shipped right to you. But back to the broccoli at hand…

What is broccoli salad made of?

This salad is made up of 8 ingredients you may already have on hand! You will need fresh broccoli, dried cranberries, walnuts, fresh dill, garlic, celery seed, mayo and white wine vinegar.

First you will need to finely dice your broccoli. If the pieces are too big it won’t allow everything to come together cohesively. Then toss your broccoli pieces into a medium bowl.

Next, finely dice your cranberries and walnuts and add them to the bowl as well. Then add your garlic (fresh or dried), fresh chopped dill and celery seed. Note: If you prefer caraway, poppy or fennel seed you can swap out the celery seed for either of those.

Mix + Chill

Finally, add your mayo and white wine vinegar and mix well. Taste and adjust accordingly with salt and pepper. Chill for at least 1 hour to give the flavors time to develop. This Broccoli Salad is a great addition to any picnic or family gathering.
